Satisfying, nourishing, delicious, energising, brain boosting and fat burning fats are essential, GOOD for you and believe it or not, will keep you slim and looking young.trevordiy.wordpress.com
We’re talking good fats, which occur naturally in food and contain essential fatty acids. These are found in nuts, seeds, oils, meat, dairy, fish, seafood and avocados. They’ll tell your brain when to stop eating.
We’re NOT talking about man-made or trans fats which are found in highly processed foods such as margarines, doughnuts, biscuits, muffins, pastries, low-fat yoghurt, processed meats, ice cream, salad dressings, ready meals or anything with a long shelf life. These are the big baddies and are generally high in refined sugar, chemicals and salt. They contribute to bad cholesterol and pose a threat to heart health among other things such as obesity, infertility and some cancers. They cheat your body out of feeling good.
Back to the good fat, did you know that fat doesn’t make you fat? In fact it does the opposite, good fat burns fat especially around the waist and tummy. Essential fatty acids found in oily fish such as salmon, also move fat out of the fat cells and into the bloodstream where it can be worked off.
Fat stabilizes sugar levels. It slows down the rate at which sugar hits the blood stream, keeping blood sugar levels steady and cravings at bay. It supports brain and liver function. It also helps to cushion your joints and prevent injuries. It boosts concentration and energy levels and contributes to glowingly skin, healthy hair and nails.
Fat is so important that nutritionists such as James Duigan recommend that we include it with every meal. This is so that we can absorb energizing, fat-soluble vitamins and minerals. He recommends including almonds with fruit, avocado, or at least olive oil with a salad and to never ever have a fat-free meal. A body that is nutrient rich will not crave and feel sluggish but it will burn fat a lot faster.
So by choosing butter over margarine, whole milk yoghurt over low-fat, regular cream cheese or hummus over the ‘light’ or ‘low-fat’ versions, the chances are that you won’t eat as much, that you won’t snack as much, that your food will NOT be highly substituted with sugar, chemicals and salt. You will enjoy it more and do your body a huge favour by nourishing it and giving it food it can work with to keep you energised feeling good.
Like everything in life, moderation is key. Choose wisely and fall for fat (the good stuff!).
